Club of the Week (3-28-07)

With sooo many gay clubs in NYC its hard for many people to decide where to go. As a result we tend to stick to the 3 or 4 that are extremely familiar and when we do vernture to new ones its only from a good recommendation from someone we know. The problem with this is that many times when we try a new place and have a bad experience we don't want to return there and can avoid that club for years sometime. Each week check back here to find a new club (sometimes they are old) that i will hopefully either open your eyes to or maybe fix that bad experience you may have had and help you explore suxh diversity that NYC has soooo much of to offer.

This weeks club is Rush, formerly Heaven. Now im sure there are many people out there that have all kinds of stories they can tell about the club, from bad promoters to poor DJ's or bad drinks. No matter how long ago it was its about time to check this place out again. After a major overhaul in promotion, ownership & management this club has finally gotten the face lift it needed.
If you remember the first floor you'll remember how small it felt with the long dj booth along the wall and the stage with bars in front and all those aweful mirrors everywhere. Now as you step into the new entrance of the club you'll find new paint everywhere, a new floor and more space than you ever thought you would find in this club. As the new owners came in the first thing to go was that long dj booth and in their genius they ripped that out and moved it closer to the back wall to open up much more dance space and made a bit of a larger stage so that everything is right there. Their next step was to replace the lighting and sound that needed a boost into this century. Replacing the old turn tables with new digital mp3 players and new subs under the stage has made the sound better than ever. The lights came down next and new strobes, spots & colors went up to give the new floor new life, specially with the addition of a new fog machine that just makes the lights dance across the floor.
Once you've taken in the first floor you might wanna just move upstairs to the second floor which has also been totally renovated. As you walk up the stairs the first thing you will notice is that you dont see your reflection everywhere you turn. I think those were prolly the first things to go and now with that alone the second floor has opened up and you don't feel like you're in a fun house when you're on the dance floor. New seating against the wall also adds to this new dance floor as well as the actual floor which has been put back to the original wood that was there so long ago.
All those renovations together with the newly painted and changed front have made this a new club that everyone should check out. The management has changed a few of the promoters and those left are ready to turn this club back into a hot spot that everyone wants to come to

Instinct Magazine and Andrew Christian present The Black Out Tour with DJ Seth Gold

March 27th, 2007 (New York City, NY): A darkness as intense as a total eclipse of the moon looms into premiere gay nightclubs across the country this summer as Instinct Magazine and Andrew Christian Inc. present DJ Seth Gold's "The Black Out Tour". In each event city, Gold Productions will transform dance floors into underground caves of blackness. The only source of light will be from glow in-the-dark visors and bandanas provided by Andrew Christian, and glow sticks hung from the bodies of club goers.

"I have always been intrigued by the concept of a totally dark dance floor," said Seth Gold, the DJ and original mastermind of the production. "For one night, club goers will rely on the sensory I regard as the most important on my dance floor - hearing"

"We know from the old junior high party game, "Seven Minutes in Heaven" that anything can happen in the dark," he continues. "Turning out the lights essentially makes the dance floor one big closet. As gay men, many of us have forgotten how fun closets can be."

Eddie Chavez, of Instinct Magazine agrees, calling "The Black Out Tour" the sexiest national tour of the summer. "The concept allows club goers to make the experience their own. In the dark, imaginations run wild. Seth Gold's music will be the guide for the journey, but it's amazing to see the different directions individual clubbers go."

"Of course, there does seem to be one common theme in most journeys," laughs Gold.

In addition to darkness, "The Black Out Tour" will feature exclusive prizes from Instinct Magazine and branded giveaways from the popular underwear and active wear design label, Andrew Christian.

"My events with Instinct Magazine have always been popular, and recently, I've begun to notice that Andrew Christian is being worn by a lot of my fans. Tying it all together made sense," says Gold.

Seth Gold's "The Black Out Tour" builds on the momentum of his highly successful past tours, "The Varsity Tour" and "The Gay College Party". "The Varsity Tour and The Gay College Party were great learning experiences," explains Gold. "The Black Out Tour, however, is already far exceeding both as it is supported by a national ad campaign. I'm excited to be making my debut in several new cities with this tour."

Gold says the tour's innovative yet simple theme is the reason for its success. "The new trend in nightlife is giving club goers their moneys worth. For too long, promoters demanded big bucks and offered little in return. Clubs are finally realizing that they need to deliver fun times at a fair price and earn back the respect of club goers."

According to Gold, the days of circuit parties, where guys traveled to the events, are over. Now, parties must travel to the crowds.

"It isn't a secret that the country is facing some tough economical times," explains Gold. "We are at war and trickle down economics is in affect. With hotel, meals and travel, big parties could cost over $1000. It's more efficient and cost-effective for parties to tour as opposed to individual club goers."

Packaging tours has also increased Gold's profile as a DJ. "DJ's that merely play records are a dime a dozen. Clubs that already have successful nights with local talent have no incentive to bring DJs in if all they do is play cds. I'm bringing an entire event and taking over the night. I'm offering something of real value."

Other DJs, however, argue there is a risk that Gold's artistry may be overshadowed by the production. He disagrees. "If clubbers love the theme and don't notice my beats, I don't see it as a loss. It's a gain because they will be more excited about coming out next time we're in town with another great theme. Those that love the music will remember me also. So I think of it more as a one-two punch, not a situation where one may overshadow the other."

"Taking "The Black Out Tour" on the road is a huge undertaking, and it hasn't been easy," reflects Gold. "Still, it has been exciting to see it all come together. I regard this tour as a long term venture. One we will expand upon, with new ideas and themes as time goes on.

Tour dates are as follows with additional dates being added throughout the summer:
April 5: New York City at Splash
April 7: Las Vegas at Krave
April 28: Central Pennsylvania at XS
May 4: Philadelphia at Blue Ball
May 5: Kentucky at Connection
May 18: Pittsburgh at Pegasus
May 19: Pittsburgh at Eagle
May 26: Fire Island at Pavillion
June 2: Baltimore at Hippo
